Ontario invited 2,086 healthcare professionals through the OINP-HCP Stream On February 6, 2024, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) conducted the first invitation draw of the year under the Human Capital Priorities Stream. The OINP issued 2,086 targeted Notifications of Interest (NOIs) to healthcare professionals with work experience in 42 National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes.  Invited candidates' comprehensive ranking system (CRS) Express Entry score was between 379 and 430 points. Last year, the province invited 17,502 candidates through fourteen Express Entry Human Capital Priorities Stream draws.  In 2024, Ontario issued 10,208 invitations under all streams of OINP. Canada is increasing the immigration of medical professionals Despite being a significant part of the healthcare workforce, International Medical Graduates (IMGs) encounter barriers, such as limited residency spots and preferences for graduates from domestic medical schools. The struggle for IMGs to secure medical residencies contributes to the country's need for more primary care doctors. Government data reveals that immigrants comprise a substantial portion of healthcare workers in various professions, including 36% of physicians.  However, the challenge lies in integrating foreign-trained doctors into the Canadian healthcare system. Canada is addressing this issue by investing in foreign credential recognition. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have committed up to $86 million in funding to 15 nationwide organizations. New Brunswick welcomes international nurses into the healthcare system On January 30, 2024, New Brunswick's Health Minister Bruce Fitch celebrated the contributions of internationally educated nurses at Loch Lomond Villa, Saint John. The Minister reiterated the government's commitment to healthcare workforce growth, emphasizing the importance of recruiting nurses.  Over 180 job offers have been accepted from a recruitment mission in the Philippines, and since 2021, over 500 internationally educated nurses, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and healthcare aides, have been recruited.  Over 200 are already employed in the province, with others undergoing the immigration process. The process to become licensed in New Brunswick has been expedited for nurses from 14 countries. These nurses can work in support positions before becoming licensed. Canada assists 6,600 internationally trained health professionals to work in Canada Canada accelerates accreditation for foreign health professionals. The Canadian Government assists 6,600 internationally trained health professionals to work in Canada by providing $86 million for credential recognition. The funding will be allocated to 15 different organizations to improve foreign credential recognition in key health professions. The 15 funded projects that span the country will: Reduce barriers to foreign credential recognition for IEHPs by improving recognition processes, simplifying credential recognition steps, and providing increased field practice opportunities. Provide IEHPs with relevant Canadian work experience in their chosen fields, as well as wrap-around services such as childcare and transportation, mentoring, and coaching. Manitoba is working to ease barriers for internationally-educated nurses Manitoba's Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino is working to ease accreditation for internationally-educated nurses in the province. Marcelino, who took over the immigration portfolio a month ago, is responding to calls from these nurses across Canada.  The Manitoba government successfully welcomed hundreds of foreign healthcare professionals after a Philippines mission, with over 300 now working as nurses or health aides across the province.  Manitoba Health Minister Audrey Gordon reiterated their commitment to health system improvement and patient care access. Ontario invited 2,437 candidates under two streams of the OINP On December 5, 2023, the Government of Ontario held new draws under two streams of the OINP in the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills Stream (EJO IDS) and Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker Stream (EJO FW) of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).  The province held three draws in the EJO FW Stream and issued 2,437 invitations to apply (ITAs) to eligible candidates working in healthcare, tech, and skilled trades occupations and those applying under the Economic Mobility Pathways.  In addition, Ontario held another draw for the EJO IDS stream and issued 262 invitations to apply in a general draw to candidates with a minimum score of 30. In total, OINP issued invitations to 39,564 candidates in 2023.
