About the Express Entry draws for agriculture and agri-food workers

On September 27, 2023, Canada announced the first round of invitations for agriculture and agri-food occupations through category-based selection under Express Entry. This draw focuses on candidates with experience in the agriculture and agri-food sectors, including:

  • agricultural service contractors,

  • farm supervisors, and

  • butchers.

Canada's Express Entry system is now tailored to provide a streamlined pathway for individuals with expertise in critical fields. By prioritizing skilled newcomers with work experience in agriculture and agri-food jobs, the government aims to meet the increasing demand for talent and fill critical positions in farming and food processing. The category-based selection rounds and general and program-specific invitation rounds will continue throughout the year

What is category-based selection?

On May 31, 2023, the Government of Canada launched a category-based selection for Express Entry, allowing IRCC to invite prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training, or language ability.  This year, invitations will focus on candidates with strong French language proficiency or experience in:

  • healthcare,

  • STEM professions,

  • trades,

  • transport,

  • agriculture, and

  • agri-food.

Category-based selection supports Canada's commitment to welcoming skilled workers into communities nationwide. Click here to complete details about Express Entry Category base selection.

IRCC will continue to hold virtual citizenship ceremonies

IRCC will continue to hold virtual citizenship ceremonies According to the Government of Canada’s response to the petition on citizenship ceremonies, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is considering an online tool for self- administered Oath of Citizenship . The analysis is underway, considering client experience, process integrity, and preserving the importance of citizenship ceremonies.  Video ceremonies introduced in 2020 due to COVID-19 have helped reduce processing times and increased monthly oath-taking. Ceremonies are scheduled considering operational demands, official availability, and venue suitability. IRCC is working towards a 12-month service standard for granting citizenship. If you are applying for citizenship, you must be a permanent resident (PR) in Canada, regardless of your age. ...

IRCC sets new wage rules for employers recruiting temporary foreign workers

IRCC sets new wage rules for employers recruiting temporary foreign workers From January 1, 2024, employers recruiting through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) must adjust foreign workers' wages to match updated prevailing rates, as per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Although some employers are exempt, this usually requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The Job Bank updates provincial wage differences annually.  Canada is inviting foreign workers to boost its economy amid labor shortages, with potential losses of $38 billion due to shortages, as the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) reported. Foreign workers in Canada are legally entitled to the same rights as Canadians, with employers required to ensure a fair work environment and access to healthcare. Even if the prevailing wage falls, the updated wage can never fall below the wage identified in the positive LMIA at any time during a TFW's employment period. Emplo...
